Founded in 1976 by David Ouchterlony, the Choir School introduces children and youth to the joy of making music together. Behind the scenes, the music tutoring program provides choristers with a solid music education on many levels. Participants can receive private tutoring in voice, keyboard, and/or music theory at minimal expense. The Choir School Endowment Fund covers over 70% of the cost. Everyone participates in learning to read music, play instruments, and perform music from many genres, from classical, to gospel, to jazz. The Choir School Executive, made up of choir parents, music tutors, and the director of music, is chaired by Lisa Brisebois (lisa.brisebois@sympatico.ca). It supports all aspects of the Choir School program.
Each of the Choir School choirs sings approximately two to three Sundays a month from September through May at the 9:15 a.m. service. In addition, the Choir School competes in the Kiwanis Music Festival in February, sings in special Christmas events, presents a Celebration Concert in the spring, and enjoys the occasional crazy pizza party! And be warned, candy is sometimes involved in rehearsals.
NEW THIS YEAR! On September 12th, we are holding a fantastic information session. Both parents and children/teens must attend. Parents will be given a brief but invaluable presentation by the Choir School Executive, providing information on all dates, goals, and expectations. Children and teens will at this time have the opportunity to have a brief, informal music rehearsal and information session with Music Director Marty Smyth.
Children’s Choir
Membership in the Children’s Choir is open to boys and girls aged six to approximately thirteen. Previous musical experience is not required, but potential choristers should have adequate maturity to participate in a structured activity lasting one hour. The ability to read (words, not music) is also an asset. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The first rehearsal, at which interested visitors are warmly welcome, will be held on September 19 at 5:30 p.m.
Youth Choir
This teenage vocal ensemble gives singers a unique opportunity to explore worship music of all styles: traditional and contemporary, classical and jazz, gospel, folk, R&B. Solos, duets, and ensemble singing give individuals the
chance to learn and refine performance skills, and to provide valued leadership in worship services. Rehearsals are held Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Our first rehearsal, open to everyone who is interested, will be held on September 19, 2007.
